The fuel cost for a trip is calculated by first determining how many gallons (or liters) of fuel you will consume, then multiplying that quantity by the price per gallon (or liter).
Step 1 — Calculate fuel consumed: Divide the total trip distance by your vehicle's fuel efficiency rating.
Step 2 — Calculate total cost: Multiply the fuel consumed by the price of fuel per unit.
This gives you the total out-of-pocket fuel expense for the trip.

In this example, a round trip from Chicago to Nashville covering 952 miles in a vehicle that gets 30 MPG at a gas price of $3.45/gallon would cost approximately $109.47 in fuel. This figure is an estimate — actual costs can vary slightly due to driving conditions, speed, air conditioning use, road grade, and minor fluctuations in fuel prices along the route. Always budget a small buffer (5–10%) above your estimate for real-world variation.

In the United States, fuel economy is measured in miles per gallon (MPG) — a higher number is better. In most other countries, it is measured in liters per 100 kilometers (L/100km) — a lower number is better. Our calculator supports both systems.

For electric vehicles, the equivalent calculation uses miles per kWh and the cost per kWh of electricity. Hybrid vehicles have a combined MPG rating, which you can use directly in this calculator.

The calculator gives a reliable estimate based on your inputs. Real-world fuel costs may vary by 5–15% due to driving style, road conditions, traffic, weather, and AC use. For the closest estimate, use your vehicle's real-world MPG (tracked over several fill-ups) rather than the EPA rating.
If your efficiency is in L/100km, the formula changes slightly: Fuel Cost = (Distance in km ÷ 100) × Fuel Efficiency (L/100km) × Fuel Price per liter. For example, a 500 km trip in a car that uses 7 L/100km at $1.60/L costs (500 ÷ 100) × 7 × $1.60 = $56.00.
