GPA is computed as a weighted average of grade points, where each course's grade points are weighted by its credit hours. First, convert each letter grade to its numeric grade point value (e.g., A = 4.0, B = 3.0). Then multiply each course's grade point value by its credit hours to get quality points. Finally, divide the total quality points by the total credit hours attempted.

A GPA of 3.38 falls solidly in the B+ range and reflects strong performance across all four courses. The Calculus I grade (A, 4 credits) carries the most weight and pulls the average up, while the Chemistry Lab C+ has minimal impact due to its single credit hour. On most institutional scales, a 3.38 GPA would qualify for Dean's List consideration (typically 3.5+) with modest improvement in one or two courses.

A 4-credit course has four times the impact on your GPA as a 1-credit course. This is why excelling in high-credit core courses (like Calculus or English Composition) has a disproportionately positive effect, while a poor grade in a 1-credit elective barely moves the needle.
Because GPA is a weighted average, your ability to raise it depends on how many credit hours you have already completed. Early in your academic career, a single excellent semester can substantially raise your cumulative GPA. Later on, you need sustained strong performance over many credit hours to move the needle significantly.
It depends on your current GPA and total credits completed. For example, if you have a 2.5 GPA after 60 credits and earn a 4.0 for the next 30 credits, your new cumulative GPA would be approximately 2.83. The more credits you have banked, the harder it is to move the needle — which is why addressing GPA issues early matters.
At most U.S. colleges, a 3.5 cumulative GPA qualifies for Cum Laude recognition at graduation. Magna Cum Laude typically requires 3.7–3.8+, and Summa Cum Laude usually requires 3.9 or higher, though exact thresholds vary by institution.
Courses taken pass/fail (P/F or S/U — Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) are typically excluded from GPA calculations. A passing grade earns credit hours but contributes zero grade points in the GPA formula, so neither a P nor an F in pass/fail mode changes your GPA at most schools.
An **unweighted GPA** treats all courses equally on a 4.0 scale regardless of difficulty. A **weighted GPA** (common in high school) assigns higher grade point values to honors, AP, or IB courses (e.g., A = 5.0 in an AP class). College GPA calculations are almost always unweighted on the standard 4.0 scale.
A GPA of 3.0 or above is generally considered good and keeps you in solid academic standing. A 3.5+ is often required for Dean's List honors, and most competitive graduate programs look for a 3.0–3.5 minimum, with top programs often expecting 3.5 or higher.
In most cases, a W (Withdrawal) does not affect your GPA because no grade points are assigned. However, it does appear on your transcript and may affect financial aid eligibility if you drop below a certain credit-hour threshold. Always check your school's policy.
